National Disability Insurance Scheme

The NDIS is a government agency set up to manage the funding of disability services.

Once approved, accessing services through the NDIS does not directly cost you anything.  The scheme is paid via tax contributions, like Medicare.  NDIS is not means tested and will not affect Disability Support Pension payments.

To be approved as a recipient of NDIS funding, you (or your child) must

• have a permanent or significant disability that requires help from others to do things
• require equipment and/or 
• need assistive technology

Should you be seeking support for you child, they will also need to meet the following early intervention requirements:

• your child is under 6 years of age and has a developmental delay and;
• you or your child have a disability that is likely permanent or early supports would reduce the level of assistance that may be needed to do things in the future.  

Support can include services that will assist learning, work, daily living, equipment and assistive technology, health, hobbies, transport and accomodation.
